Contract Lens — API & tutorial Open the app

Drive the contract review from your own code

Everything this app does goes through the SkillSafe App API — plain JSON over HTTPS with optional streaming. One run takes the pasted contract and returns a severity-tiered risk review: red flags with the clause quoted verbatim, yellow flags, missing protections, key terms and a negotiation playbook. Examples in cURL, Python, JavaScript, Go, Java, Ruby, PHP and C#. Not legal advice.

Basics

Base URL: https://api.skillsafe.ai/v1/app-api. Every request sends Authorization: Bearer <token> and JSON bodies with Content-Type: application/json. Responses are wrapped in an envelope: {"data": …} on success, {"error": {"code", "message"}} on failure. Runs execute the app's agent (model gpt-terra) and are billed in SkillSafe credits to the calling token, with a worst-case hold up front and the actual cost settled when the job finishes.

StatusMeaning
401Missing or expired token — create a new session.
402Not enough credits — top up at skillsafe.ai/account/billing.
403The token isn't allowed to do this.
404Unknown job or record id.
5xxTransient platform error — retry with backoff.

Browsers enforce CORS for this API, so run these examples from a server, script or terminal — not from another website's frontend. The app's history collection is its internal "recent runs" store, not a public API surface — read your results from the job output instead.

Step 0 — A tiny client

Everything below is one or two HTTP calls, so start with a small helper that adds the auth header, sends JSON and unwraps the data envelope. The later steps reuse this helper.

export API="https://api.skillsafe.ai/v1/app-api"
export SKILLSAFE_TOKEN="YOUR_TOKEN"      # see step 1

# every call looks like:
#   curl -s "$API/…" -H "Authorization: Bearer $SKILLSAFE_TOKEN" [-d '{json}']
# jq is used below to pull fields out of the {"data": …} envelope
import json, os, requests

API = "https://api.skillsafe.ai/v1/app-api"
TOKEN = os.environ["SKILLSAFE_TOKEN"]  # see step 1

def api(method, path, body=None, **headers):
    res = requests.request(method, API + path, json=body,
                           headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {TOKEN}", **headers})
    payload = res.json()
    if not res.ok:
        raise RuntimeError(payload.get("error", {}).get("message", res.reason))
    return payload["data"]
// Node 18+ (built-in fetch)

        return json.GetProperty("data");
    }
}

Step 1 — Get a token

POST /guest

For scripted use, the simplest reliable path is your personal token: open the token page, sign in, and hit "Copy shell export" — it puts export SKILLSAFE_TOKEN="…" on your clipboard, which every example below reads. Treat the token like a password — it can spend your credits. For fully headless scripts, POST /guest (below) mints a guest token with no browser involved; guests can always call /me and /estimate, but whether a guest can afford an actual run depends on the app's daily sponsorship budget, so don't build on it.

curl -s -X POST "$API/guest" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"slug":"contract-lens"}' | jq -r '.data.token'
token = api("POST", "/guest", {"slug": "contract-lens"})["token"]
const { token } = await api("POST", "/guest", { slug: "contract-lens" });
var guest struct{ Token string `json:"token"` }
err := call("POST", "/guest", map[string]string{"slug": "contract-lens"}, &guest)
String envelope = api("POST", "/guest", """
    {"slug":"contract-lens"}""");
// token is at data.token in the returned JSON
token = api("POST", "/guest", { slug: "contract-lens" })["token"]
$token = api("POST", "/guest", ["slug" => "contract-lens"])["token"];
var guest = await SkillSafe.ApiAsync(HttpMethod.Post, "/guest",
    new { slug = "contract-lens" });
var token = guest.GetProperty("token").GetString();

Step 2 — Check who you are and your balance

GET /me

Returns subject_type ("user" or "guest"), subject_id and your credits balance. Check this before an expensive run — the app itself refuses to start a run the balance can't cover.

curl -s "$API/me" -H "Authorization: Bearer $SKILLSAFE_TOKEN" | jq '.data'
me = api("GET", "/me")
print(me["subject_type"], me["credits"])
const me = await api("GET", "/me");
console.log(me.subject_type, me.credits);
var me struct {
	SubjectType string `json:"subject_type"`
	Credits     int64  `json:"credits"`
}
err := call("GET", "/me", nil, &me)
String envelope = api("GET", "/me", null);
// data.subject_type, data.credits
me = api("GET", "/me")
puts "#{me["subject_type"]}: #{me["credits"]} credits"
$me = api("GET", "/me");
echo "{$me['subject_type']}: {$me['credits']} credits\n";
var me = await SkillSafe.ApiAsync(HttpMethod.Get, "/me");
Console.WriteLine($"{me.GetProperty("subject_type")}: {me.GetProperty("credits")} credits");

Step 3 — Estimate the cost

POST /estimate

Send the same input you would send to a run; the response's hold_credits is the worst-case cost and min_credits the floor. Nothing is charged and no job is created. The response also reports the resolved model and whether sponsorship is active.

curl -s -X POST "$API/estimate" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SKILLSAFE_TOKEN" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"contract_text":"…the full pasted contract…","party":"provider","contract_type":"msa","context":""}' | jq '.data'
est = api("POST", "/estimate", {"contract_text": contract, "party": "provider",
                                "contract_type": "auto", "context": ""})
print("worst case:", est["hold_credits"], "credits on", est["model"])
const est = await api("POST", "/estimate", {
  contract_text: contract, party: "provider", contract_type: "auto", context: "",
});
console.log("worst case:", est.hold_credits, "credits on", est.model);
var est struct {
	HoldCredits int64  `json:"hold_credits"`
	Model       string `json:"model"`
}
err := call("POST", "/estimate", map[string]string{
	"contract_text": contract, "party": "provider",
	"contract_type": "auto", "context": "",
}, &est)
String envelope = api("POST", "/estimate", """
    {"contract_text": %s, "party": "provider", "contract_type": "auto", "context": ""}
    """.formatted(toJsonString(contract)));
// worst-case cost is at data.hold_credits
est = api("POST", "/estimate", { contract_text: contract, party: "provider",
                                 contract_type: "auto", context: "" })
puts "worst case: #{est["hold_credits"]} credits on #{est["model"]}"
$est = api("POST", "/estimate", [
    "contract_text" => $contract,
    "party" => "provider",
    "contract_type" => "auto",
    "context" => "",
]);
echo "worst case: {$est['hold_credits']} credits on {$est['model']}\n";
var est = await SkillSafe.ApiAsync(HttpMethod.Post, "/estimate", new {
    contract_text = contract, party = "provider", contract_type = "auto", context = "" });
Console.WriteLine($"worst case: {est.GetProperty("hold_credits")} credits");

Step 4 — Run the review and wait

POST /run
GET /jobs/{job_id}

/run places a credit hold and returns a job_id; poll /jobs/{job_id} every 1–2 seconds until status is succeeded or failed. Always send an Idempotency-Key header so a network retry can't start a second, double-charged run. The agent replies with one JSON object, delivered as a string at output.output — parse it.

Input fieldTypeNotes
contract_textstring, requiredThe full contract text, exhibits and schedules included. The web app clips its own input at 200,000 characters by removing the middle and keeping both ends — a contract states its liability caps and termination terms at the back — and labels the cut in-band with a [CONTRACT LENS: … removed from the MIDDLE …] marker. If you clip your own input, do the same: the agent is instructed to trust that marker, to analyze only what is present, and to record the shortfall as a Coverage row in key_terms.
partystring, optional"provider" (you deliver), "customer" (you buy/receive), or "auto" to let the agent infer your side.
contract_typestring, optionalOne of auto, nda, msa, sow, saas, consulting, subcontractor, vendor. auto means detect it.
contextstring, optionalFree-text notes: company size, what you care about, deal background.
retry_notestring, optionalFeedback about a previous malformed reply; the agent obeys it exactly.

The review has this shape (every array is present even when empty):

FieldWhat it is
contract_typePlain-language label, e.g. "Master Services Agreement (MSA)" — or "not-a-contract" when the input isn't a contract.
parties[{name, role}] — the parties as written, with which one is (you).
party_noteOne sentence on which side you are on and whether this reads like a counterparty template.
summaryPlain-language contract summary; always non-empty, always ends with the not-legal-advice reminder.
red_flags / yellow_flags[{category, clause, location, problem, suggestion}]. clause is a verbatim quote from the contract (possibly shortened with an ellipsis); red = push back before signing, yellow = negotiate.
missing[{item, why}] — protections the contract is silent on.
key_terms[{label, value}] — awareness-only facts: payment schedule, notice periods, renewal dates, governing law.
playbook[{flag, ask, framing, compromise}] — one entry per red/yellow flag.

If the reply ever fails to parse as JSON, retry once with the same input plus a retry_note field describing the problem — the agent is instructed to obey it. That's exactly what the app itself does (and it reuses an idempotency key derived from the same input, with a bumped attempt counter). This is analysis tooling, not legal advice — the summary says so, and red flags warrant an attorney.

Step 5 — The same run, streamed

POST /run-stream

Identical input to /run, but the response is text/event-stream, so you can show output as it generates. Events:

EventData
job{job_id} — the run was accepted.
delta{text} — the next chunk of agent output.
done / pendingFinal payload: {job_id, status, charged_credits, output}. Authoritative — deltas can drop the tail, so always read the result from here.

The app's own UI runs on /run-stream: it watches the streamed keys ("red_flags", "playbook"…) to advance its progress steps, then parses the authoritative done payload. If the stream drops mid-run it salvages the sections that already streamed — a pattern worth copying.
